About this series: Toronto Before: Arches
Most often when we hear the work remix we think of urban music and the re-making of an old song or the combination of two songs into one. Then and Now remixes follow the same logic. They remake an old picture by combining the old with the new. Blending two images gives us unique insight into how things have changed, how things could have been were some changes never made, and a general feel for the past while keeping the present in perspective.
For more than 100 years Torontonians have been photographing the buildings that define their identity and heritage. Toronto Before: Arches is a collection of Then and Now Remixes that offer a glimpse of the city’s civic buildings and the people who gathered in their public spaces. The entrance arches of Ontario Legislative Building and Old City Hall set the stage for the re-entry of these historical photographs into our modern digital world.
