The Mogao Grottoes (Caves of the Thousand Buddhas) is about 30 minutes from Dunhuang towards the desert. The area is a system of Buddhist caves that spanned from the 4th to the 14th century. These cave temples are part of the deep cultural history of the Silk Road. There are also 50,000 manuscripts, sutras and paintings on silk and paper written in many languages discovered by a monk in 1900.
