China Dancing

One of my favourite ways to past the evening hours after dinner is to stroll the streets of China. You will inevitably come across people dancing to the tunes of various types of music.

Ballroom dancing is huge in China but I never knew I would come across this on the streets in Harbin. I got a kick of watching the older couples swinging in the streets thoroughly enjoying themselves. There were always hundreds of people lining the streets so the atmosphere was quite festive. However, around 9 PM, the music would promptly stop and everyone would make their way home.

This was an odd one that I ran into in Beijing. In front of a Catholic church on the main street in the night shopping district, there were these folks doing something similar to line dancing. Anyone could join in and there were teachers on site in case you need some intensive instructions. I spent two nights in a row watching them dancing to western pop songs and still couldn’t figure out the type of dance they were doing. The scene in Saturday Night Fever with John Travolta on the disco dance floor came to mind.
