About this series: The Spirit of Nature

All my life I have had an urge to be artistic, but as a kid, I discovered that unfortunately I could not draw or paint. Now, finally, I’ve found a way to let my creative juices flow, use my imagination and produce some original artwork. I was always a keen amateur photographer, but it wasn’t until I really learned the craft and discovered Encaustic that it all came together.

The process: I blend lots of photographic images together – flowers, rust, cracked concrete, gravestones, even vintage farm machinery. Once I get what I want I print and mount the images, then transform them into painterly works of art by coating them with encaustic medium (that’s beeswax). Many people ask, “Is that a painting or a photograph ?”

My inspiration comes from two sources: Firstly, flowers – Gardening, visiting Garden Centres and any type of Botanical gardens is wonderful… how can one not enjoy and appreciate the wonder of plants ? Their colours, shapes and form ? The way they always come back to life after the long bleak winter ? They are all gorgeous. My second source of inspiration is capturing the beauty of my birthplace. Scotland is a place I am passionate about. The landscape, the light, the food, the ancient castles and graveyards, the sea and the mountains – all conspire to get me to return over and over again.

And that is the spirtit of nature.
